Climate Heating in New England More Rapidly Than Most Places on Earth, Research Reveals.
The US region renowned for its colonial history, sweet syrup and frigid, snow-bound winters is undergoing a rapid transformation. New research finds that New England is warming more quickly than nearly any other place on the planet.
Breakneck Pace of Change
The rate of warming in New England makes it the fastest-heating region of the contiguous United States, as per the study. The pace of its temperature rise has reportedly increased notably in the last half-decade.
"The temperature is not only increasing, it's speeding up," said a lead researcher on the study. "It's really sped up in recent years, which was unexpected to me. Our climate is shifting in a new direction, after being largely consistent for millennia."
The analysis places the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming zones in the world, alongside the polar region and sections of Europe and China. "New England is now heading towards being like the American South," the researcher added.
Study Approach and Results
For the study, researchers analyzed three datasets on day and night temperatures and snow cover dating back to 1900. The analysis covered the six states of the New England region.
They found that New England has warmed by an mean of 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the global average, with the planet heating by approximately 1.3°C in the comparable timeframe.
"That is very fast warming, which is worrying," commented the study author.
Notable Climate Patterns
- Minimum temperatures are increasing more quickly than maximum temperatures.
- Winters are warming at twice the rate of other times of year.
- The harsh winter chill characteristic of the region is being reduced.
Marine Factors and the "Energy Storage"
A primary cause for this exceptional accumulation of heat may be changes in the Atlantic Ocean. The world's oceans are taking in more than 90% of the surplus thermal energy trapped by emissions.
In the region near New England, an increase of meltwater from Arctic ice melt is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is directing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, congregating heat along the coastline that is then carried inland by wind patterns.
"Surplus thermal energy from climate change is being stored in the sea like a massive storage unit," explained the researcher. "This is now being released into the air and New England is a receiver of that heat."
Consequences on Culture and Weather
Once considered a relatively stable region, New England has suffered extreme weather shocks in the past decade, including enormous floods and extended drought.
The rising heat endangers cherished elements of regional life:
- Maple syrup production is being affected by changing climate conditions.
- Cold-weather activities are disrupted; an hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been called off or moved multiple times due to a lack of ice.
- Winter tourism have faced difficulties because of inadequate snow.
"I reside just north of Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the ponds regularly," said the researcher. "That tradition has largely disappeared from much of the southern part of the region."
