No less than 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime
No less than 64 people were killed in a police operation cracking down on the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's records.
Four security agents lost their lives during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives stated. More than 80 individuals were taken into custody.
Violent conflicts broke out when around 2,500 security personnel entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho responded with armed resistance, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives confirmed.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "appalled" by the security action, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Operation Impact
The slum neighborhoods adjacent to Rio's airport is considered to be the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
State officials stated at least 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Numerous individuals were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Community Response
Community members have compared the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.
Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.
Organized Crime Spread
The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, increasing drug trafficking routes and dominance over the slum communities.
Local law enforcement reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were captured in the raid, together with multiple guns.
