One of the co-founders behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction of a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, that co-founded the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he plans to personally create this new flavor within a personal series highlighting causes the company was prevented from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators versus Parent Company

This latest announcement deepens the ongoing tension between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with Unilever, the British consumer goods giant that has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

The co-founders have claimed that the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".

Watermelon Flavor becoming an Emblem for Solidarity

The entrepreneur announced via social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions regarding the product's name and potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”

The watermelon has become an emblem for support for Palestinians due to its colors, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Activism and Recent Changes

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling their Israel business to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales in disputed territories.

The new product line is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that originally created several years back to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Management Shifts plus Future Plans

The founder stated how he will develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that the company was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.

This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company recently, following many years of involvement, mentioning concerns that the company's autonomy had been undermined following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.

At that time, Ben Cohen stated how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to keep working inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he explained to journalists.
