Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have conceived – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the White House in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of multiple the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.

As bewildering as it is to witness the leader attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics a near majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have observed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we learned about into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Essentially, they converted a persona of love into a figure of hate who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more gradually, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, because theoretically the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him because they identify as skeptics or agnostics or nones. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; but I do think that exist valuable insights of great price in the Christian story.
It is decidedly not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, a baby is born to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a different country to evade secret police. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his message is about love for other people, especially for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and housing. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to offer the additional cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a way to instruct the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing states that when an individual takes your jacket you should give them your pullover also.
The apparent and straightforward fact that the Jesus from scripture requests a kind of radical love concentrated on the poor is what has always made Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the populace, but because of its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Highest Within Us
So I have been inspired to see the steadfast resistance against Trump develop during the previous year. It has served as significant comfort to assist in constructing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged voters to turn out in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners throughout each rally and appeals to the finest aspects in US history.
